Fanny Angelina (née Eilshemius, from a Dutch father) grew up in Kearny, New Jersey. During her childhood, her family learned from a Dutch friend or neighbor about agar-agar, a common ingredient in jelly desserts in Java (Indonesia), then a Dutch colony.
